Markets: Japan, Korea & Taiwan show improvement

There has been an improvement in copper wirerod used in wire and cable production in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, with a collective growth of 3.5% y/y for H1 2017. Most of the growth was seen in South Korea, with a rise of 9.5% y/y to 229,000 tonnes of copper conductor, followed by Taiwan with an increase of 2.0% to 143,000 tonnes. Japan recorded the lowest increase over H1 2017, up only 0.3% y/y to 339,000 tonnes of copper conductor.

Markets: North East Asia sees slightly better performance in 2016

Latest figures show that 2016 turned out to be a relatively good year for the region as a whole in terms of insulated cable production. It has been an up and down few years for the region. After a return to growth in 2014 and then back to decline in insulated metallic cable production in 2015, it has returned to growth again, up by 0.9% in 2016. This is also reflected in the copper wire rod use, up by 0.4% year on year.

Market: China growth continues; India strong

India continued to drive a lot of the growth in our Rest of the World section for the 9M 2016 period, while China growth was as predicted. However, Brazil remains extremely weak, essentially dragging down overall numbers. Australasia continues to be sluggish as well, but any weakness was offset by growth in the GCC, Africa and Southeast Asian regions.
