The US and Canada performed quite well in H1 2017, with copper wirerod used in wire and cable production up 2.5% and 5.1%, respectively. However, compared to last year, demand in Mexico slowed down completely, growing only at 0.1%.

Copper and aluminium conductor cables moved in separate directions in June, mainly on a rise in copper and a fall in aluminium prices. All other raw materials (steel, PVC and LLDPE) covered in CRU's Cable Index remained the same.

There has been an improvement in copper wirerod used in wire and cable production in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, with a collective growth of 3.5% y/y for H1 2017. Most of the growth was seen in South Korea, with a rise of 9.5% y/y to 229,000 tonnes of copper conductor, followed by Taiwan with an increase of 2.0% to 143,000 tonnes. Japan recorded the lowest increase over H1 2017, up only 0.3% y/y to 339,000 tonnes of copper conductor.

Prices: Lower metals prices pull down Cables Index

The Cable Index for aluminium and copper conductor cables fell by around 1-2 index points in May. The main reason for the decline is lower aluminium and copper prices. Steel prices have also declined, causing the raw materials index for steel to fall two index points.

Despite a year of uncertainties, copper wirerod used in wire and cable production for the whole of Europe was up 1.1% for FY 2016, mainly on improved demand in Russia, Poland, Germany, Italy and Spain. However, for Q1 2017, the picture reversed somewhat with growth declining 0.1% y/y.
